The Californian Sea Hare (Aplysia californica), as its name suggests, can be found off the coast of California and western Mexico. They have a speckled body, typically with red or brown undertones and black splotches. They are herbivorous, feeding on algae and other marine plants. They are capable of releasing ink when threatened, but have few predators in nature. They can reach sizes exceeding 24 inches in the wild, though they rarely exceed 12 inches in captivity. They should be kept in an aquarium of at least 50 gallons with plenty of plants to feed upon and peaceful fish.
