Saltwater aquarium crabs—whether Halloween Hermit Crabs, Dwarf Zebra Hermit Crabs, or Emerald Crabs—are hardy cleanup crew members, but they can show signs of stress or illness if conditions aren't right.
Common signs include:
- Lethargy – Staying still for long periods, ignoring food.
- Loss of limbs – Often from poor water quality, predation, or molting stress.
- Failure to molt – Healthy crabs molt regularly; delays may indicate nutritional or environmental issues.
- Discoloration – Faded shell or leg color can point to stress or poor nutrition.
- Erratic movement – Difficulty climbing or frequent falls from rockwork.
Causes often include unstable water parameters, lack of adequate food, or aggressive tankmates. Keep nitrates low, salinity stable, and provide algae-based foods plus meaty supplements when algae is scarce.
The study Health management during handling and live transport of crustaceans: a review (Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 2011) found that prolonged stress can cause reduced mobility, color fading, and delayed molting—clear warning signs for aquarists.
One customer reported healthy behavior from their Zebra Reef Hermit Crab:
"...went straight to work picking at my rockwork and cleaning food bits from my sand... Efficient and good at their job!"
A crab showing brisk movement, bright coloration, and eagerness to forage is a sign of a thriving cleanup crew.
Bottom line: Stay observant—active, colorful crabs that feed well are generally healthy. If you notice lethargy, poor molting, or discoloration, test your water parameters, improve feeding, and consider giving them a quarantine area for recovery.
