Pillow Cushion Starfish Care Facts

Care Level: Easy
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Omnivore
Reef Safe: No
Minimum Tank Size: 10 Gallons
Max Size: 12 inches
The Pillow Cushion Starfish, Culcita sp., also known as the Fat Seastar, is a large pentagonal burgundy-colored star with a soft body. It is one of the most uniquely colored and shaped stars out there. Though mostly peaceful, it can potentially trample corals under its weight so keep this in mind. The Pillow Star should be fed chopped invertebrates at least one a week. Like other starfish, the Pillow Cushion Star is very sensitive to water quality and should never be exposed to open air while handling.
It will feed primarily on algae, microfauna, and occasionally small inverts (so not necessarily reef safe) and should be housed with plenty of live rock.

The Pillow Cushion Starfish (Culcita sp.) is a unique and captivating addition to any saltwater marine aquarium. Their distinct appearance, ease of care, and compatibility with various tank mates make them an excellent choice for novice and experienced hobbyists.

Habitat of the Pillow Cushion Starfish

Pillow Cushion Starfish (Culcita sp.) are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, inhabiting various marine environments, including coral reefs, rocky areas, and sandy substrates. These intriguing creatures are known for their distinct appearance, cushion-like shape, and striking coloration. In the wild, they can often be spotted resting on the ocean floor or attached to rocks and corals.

Size and Lifespan of the Pillow Cushion Starfish

Pillow Cushion Starfish can vary in size depending on the species, with some reaching diameters of up to 12 inches. In captivity, they can live for several years, provided they receive proper care and a suitable environment.

Growth Rate of the Pillow Cushion Starfish

The growth rate of Pillow Cushion Starfish can vary among species and is influenced by factors such as water quality, diet, and tank stability. Under optimal conditions, they can gradually increase in size over time.

The Pillow Cushion Starfish 's Dietary Needs in Captivity

Pillow Cushion Starfish are primarily detritivores, meaning they feed on organic matter and small particles in the substrate. In captivity, they do not require direct feeding but instead rely on the presence of microorganisms and organic debris in the aquarium. Maintaining good water quality and proper filtration can help ensure a steady supply of food particles.

Compatibility of the Pillow Cushion Starfish with Other Fish and Invertebrates and Reefs

Pillow Cushion Starfish are not generally considered reef-safe. They will feast on invertebrates. They are compatible with various tank mates, including:

  • Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris): These clownfish often form symbiotic relationships with starfish, seeking shelter and protection within their cushiony arms.
  • Banded Coral Shrimp (Stenopus hispidus): These shrimp add visual interest to your aquarium and coexist peacefully with Pillow Cushion Starfish.
  • Turbo Snails (Turbo spp.): These snails help control algae growth in your tank while being non-invasive and suitable companions for starfish.
  • Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica): These colorful and peaceful fish add variety to your aquarium and coexist harmoniously with Pillow Cushion Starfish.
  • Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata spp.): Cleaner shrimp contribute to maintaining the health of your aquarium by removing parasites from other fish and invertebrates and can peacefully coexist with starfish.

Tank Requirements for the Pillow Cushion Starfish

To ensure the well-being of your Pillow Cushion Starfish, it's essential to provide the following tank conditions:

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: A suitable tank should have a capacity of at least 10 gallons to accommodate the starfish's size and movement. Like all starfish, do not expose them to air while handling.

Water Conditions for the Pillow Cushion Starfish :

  • pH: Maintain a stable pH level between 8.1 and 8.4.
  • Salinity: Keep salinity levels stable at 1.023 to 1.025.
  • Water Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 74-78°F (23-26°C).
  • Water Flow: Gentle to moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate nutrient distribution and prevent detritus from settling on the starfish's body.
