The Maxima Clam (Tridacna maxima) has a very wide distribution, from the Red Sea, through the reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, and among the coast of Australia and Polynesia. They prefer shallow and clear waters, high in nutrients and current. Their colors and designs may vary, though the majority are blue with stripes or spots on the mantle. It is best to acclimate them to light, by starting them on the sand bed (or lower in the tank) and slowly move them up to higher lights until they seem content. Angelfish, Butterflies and Rabbit fish may nip at the mantle, so monitor to ensure no fish are harming the clam.
