Habitat and Natural Range of Cross's Damsel

The Cross's Damsel, Neoglyphidodon crossi, is native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific region. These resilient fish can inhabit coral reefs and lagoons from the Red Sea to the Western Pacific Ocean. They often seek refuge in the wild among coral branches and rocky crevices.

Is Cross's Damsel Reef Safe?

One of the notable features of the Cross's Damsel is its compatibility with reef environments. These fish are considered reef-safe, meaning they won't harm coral colonies or other reef-dwelling organisms. Their presence can even add a touch of vitality to your coral garden.

Size and Lifespan of Cross's Damsel

Cross's Damsels are relatively small fish, making them suitable for various aquarium sizes. Typically, they grow to about 3 inches (7.5 centimeters). In captivity, with proper care, they can live for up to 5 years or more, offering marine enthusiasts a lasting presence in their aquariums.

What Does Cross's Damsel Eat in Captivity

Feeding your Cross's Damsel in captivity is straightforward. These fish are omnivores and have a hearty appetite. Their diet should include:

  • High-quality marine-based pellets: Specially formulated pellets for omnivorous marine fish serve as a staple food source.
  • Frozen and live foods: Varieties such as brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and other small crustaceans provide essential nutrients and simulate their natural diet.
  • Flakes: Marine-based flakes can be introduced to diversify their diet.

A varied diet promotes optimal health, coloration, and overall well-being for your Cross's Damsel.

Aquaculture and Availability of Cross's Damsel

Cross's Damsels are not readily available in the aquarium trade, with some specimens being sourced through aquaculture efforts. While aquacultured specimens offer advantages such as disease resistance and adaptability to aquarium life, wild-caught Cross's Damsels are also commonly found in the hobby. Choosing a reputable source that adheres to ethical collection practices is essential when selecting your fish.

Compatibility of Cross's Damsel with Other Fish and Invertebrates

Cross's Damsels are generally peaceful fish, making them compatible with a variety of marine tankmates. Here are five suitable companions to consider for your aquarium:

  • Firefish (Nemateleotris spp.): These striking and peaceful fish complement the Cross's Damsel nicely.
  • Clownfish (Amphiprion spp.): Known for their hardiness and endearing behavior, clownfish are an excellent fit for a Cross's Damsel-inhabited tank.
  • Gobies (Gobiidae family): Various species of gobies, such as the Yellow Watchman Goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus), can coexist harmoniously with Cross's Damsels.
  • Blennies (Blenniidae family): Certain blenny species, like the Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas), make interesting additions to the same aquarium.
  • Royal Gramma (Gramma loreto): These vibrant fish boast a striking coloration that contrasts nicely with the Cross's Damsel.

Consider size compatibility, dietary requirements, and preferred water conditions when choosing tankmates to ensure a harmonious community.

Sexual Dimorphism of Cross's Damsel

Cross's Damsels do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, meaning males and females have no distinct external differences.

Juvenile Cross's Damsels display a bright red body with a striking blue vertical bar. As they transition to adulthood, their coloration becomes a more subdued red with fading bar. While they may lose some of their vibrant youthfulness, they remain an attractive addition to any aquarium.

Temperament of Cross's Damsel

The Cross's Damsel is known for its generally peaceful temperament, which makes it a suitable choice for a community tank. However, like many damselfish species, they may become territorial and exhibit aggressive behavior if confined to a small space with inadequate hiding spots. Providing ample hiding spots and room for swimming can help mitigate potential aggression.

To ensure the well-being of your Cross's Damsel, consider the following tank requirements:

  • Minimum Aquarium Size: A tank with a capacity of at least 30 gallons (75 liters) can accommodate a single Cross's Damsel. Larger tanks can house multiple individuals.
  • Aquascaping: Create a habitat that mimics their natural environment with live rock formations, caves, and crevices for shelter and exploration.

I purchased 6 of these about a 7 weeks ago. All arrived healthy and eating the same day. Beautiful little fish, they do change color, not as bright as they mature. I lost one, the other five are a great addition to my reef system. They grow fast and seem to get along with everything.
